Photos by Laura McLatchy. Laura worked with Will in Malawi (1989), Pakistan (1990 &1991) and in Uganda (1998, 2001, 2002).
June, 1998 looking for some rock exposures amid the long grass! The area is the Napak Volcano (early Miocene) in Eastern Uganda.
June, 1998 prospecting with local guide Moses Aleper. The area is the Napak Volcano (early Miocene) in Eastern Uganda.
June, 2002 with the rest of the field crew (except me). From left to right is Frederick Muganwa, Moses Mafabi, Robert Kityo, Ezra Musiime and Will. The picture was taken near the Bukwa fossil locality (early Miocene) on Mt. Elgon in Eastern Uganda. In January, 2003, the same crew and I had a memorial service for Will at Napak. Everyone said a few words about Will, and it was revealed that at the end of the field season in 2002, Will had given the Ugandan team members letters saying how much he liked and respected them. Will was in alot of pain in June, 2002, although he didn't let on, and I suspect he knew in his heart he wouldn't be back to Uganda. John Kingston and Alisa Winkler were also present for the 2003 memorial. We toasted Will with his favorite drink in Uganda, a "Moroto margarita" (named for another Uganda fossil locality), made of waragi (the local spirit) and mango flavored Tang.
