The Kunes flows west along the south side of a major mountain range west of Urumqi, Xinjiang. According to Zhang Jiewe, who was a member of the Warren Yangzte expedition in 1986 and has been helping foreigners organize river and mountaineering expeditions in western China since then, a team of Chinese rafters attempted to run the Kunes and seven of them drowned.
